Automatic Video Subtitles, Explained

What automatic subtitles are, how YouTube makes them, and how to generate a subtitle file from a caption track.

Automatic means guessed from speech

YouTube can write captions by listening. Those are auto-generated. They appear quickly. They miss names, jargon, and two people talking at once.

Creator-uploaded captions are a different track. Prefer those when both exist. A comparison is in auto-generated versus manual captions.

Turn the track into a subtitle file

Paste the public URL. Download SRT from the transcript page. That file is the captions with in and out times. It does not create a new listen.

If the video has no captions, there is nothing to export. Generating subtitles from raw audio is a different product.

Fix the cues you will show

Open the SRT beside the video. Correct the lines people will read on screen. Leave the rest if you only needed the text.

Use it on a real video.

Get a transcript or a summary from the captions.
