YouTube Transcript: How to Get the Words From a Video
A YouTube transcript is the caption text of a video. Here is where it lives, how to open it, and how to copy it with timestamps.
A transcript is the caption track
A YouTube transcript is the words already attached to a public video. YouTube stores them as captions. Manual captions are typed by a person. Auto-captions are guessed from the audio.
If the video has no captions, there is no transcript to open. That is the whole limit.
Open it on YouTube
- Open the video on a computer.
- Under the title, open the description.
- Choose Show transcript.
- Click a time to jump. Copy a line if you only need one.
The panel is fine for a glance. It is a poor place to copy a long video.
Take the text with you
Paste the link into the transcript generator. You get the same captions as text you can search, copy, or download. Timestamps stay on the line.
TXT is for notes. SRT is for an editor. PDF and Word are for a file you can send. The tool is free. No account.
Read it before you quote it
Auto-captions miss names. If you will publish a line, play that second of the video. A summary is a shorter first read. The transcript is the source.
